Chapter 5 ‘Strange Trees and Bushes That Sneeze’ Page  19

Jason sat down on a rock gasping for air.  He had no idea how far he had just run but he was sure he’d put some serious distance between him and those dinosaurs.  This thought brought him little comfort.  Tommy was missing.  Jason had lost sight of him after Kypou had pushed them towards the jungle.  He had to find his little brother but it probably didn’t help much that he himself was hopelessly lost.

Jason pushed himself off the rock and continued through the jungle.  Every fiber in his being hoped that Tommy was safe.  He couldn’t bring himself to even think of the alternative because even Jason knew what kind of deadly dinosaurs the Myrites were.

With every step he took, Jason grew more and more frustrated with his situation.  The first thing he had to do was rescue himself, then he could rescue Tommy.  Soon a thought occurred to him.  Maybe, Tommy was with Kypou and the others back at the cave.  Yeah, yeah that was it, he reassured himself.  Tommy would be there waiting for him.  Jason stopped and shook his head.  Who was he kidding.  Nothing had turned out the way he wanted it to ever since they walked into this stupid world.  Rage began to boil up inside him  He viciously kick a nearby rock.

“Stupid rock!” he growled.  He kicked the rock again.

“Stupid world!’  He kicked the rock for a third time.  Then unexpectedly he heard a strange voice.

“Stop kicking me!” the voice demanded.

Startled, Jason looked around then down at the rock.  It looked like a plain old rock.   He pushed it with his foot.

“Can’t you hear?” snapped the rock.

Jason spun around only to find Harpi standing behind him.  The dinosaur had a horrible smirk on his face.  Jason was in no mood for Harpi or his wining.

“Rocks can’t talk,” said Jason, who didn’t think Harpi’s little ventriloquist act was very funny.

“Yes they can,” said Harpi arrogantly.  “And that one wants you to leave it alone.”

“Whatever,” said Jason angrily.  “Have you seen Tommy?”

Harpi shook his head and smirked again.

“The last time I saw him he was running through the jungle screaming like a little girl.”

“Shut up!” shouted Jason.  He didn’t like Harpi making fun of Tommy when he could be in serious trouble.  “What’s your problem anyway?  My brother and I haven’t done anything to you so why don’t you leave us alone!”

Harpi stepped closer to Jason, anger flashed in his eyes.

“My friends and I should be trying to save our own families, not baby-sitting you and your sniveling brother,” growled Harpi.  “Why don’t you leave now before it’s too late,” he added darkly.

Well, Jason knew a threat when he heard one.

“You don’t scare me,” snarled Jason.  “So get lost!”

“I will,” replied the dinosaur.  “And I will also be leaving you here to find your own way home.  I wouldn’t give you an ounce of my help.”

“Good!” shouted Jason.  “Because I’d rather be stuck here then spend a second longer with you.”  Jason was really mad now.

They glared at each other for a few moments then Harpi turned tail and stomped off into the jungle.

“Agggh!” screamed Jason.  He kicked the rock again.

He had no idea how to get back to the cave.  Harpi was his only chance, but there was no way he was going to ask that infuriating dinosaur for help.  Jason’s thoughts were interrupted by sounds coming from the jungle.  Great!  Harpi was probably coming back to tell me off for kicking the rock again.  Then another thought occurred to him, what if the Myrites had tracked him down.  Jason looked at the jungle around him..  It looked very big and scary and he suddenly felt very insignificant.  A small part of him, however, was wishing it was the Myrites.  He’d take them over Harpi any day.

To Jason’s relief, when the jungle parted out walked Kypou, Bonta, Typhoo, and little Peko.  Jason couldn’t remember ever feeling so relieved.

“Jason!” exclaimed Kypou.  We’ve been looking everywhere for you.  I was afraid you might have been captured.”

            Kypou looked around.

            “Where’s Tommy?” he asked.

“What!” gasped Jason, suddenly looking very worried.  “I thought he was with you!”

“No,” said Kypou shaking his head.  “He’s not.”

A horrible feeling of dread came over Jason.  The unthinkable had happened!
